No-Wrench Screw Anchor

No-Wrench Screw Anchor is also called Earth Helix Screw Anchor, it is a type of earth anchor, that functions by guying wires or cables within utility poles. It comprises an anchor rod of forged-eye, angle-cut tip, and a welded helix.

Both the Triple eye and the Thimble eye Eye anchors have a rod with an enormous opening to support a turning bar that ensures the anchor is screwed on the ground. The No wrench screw is installed by turning it into the ground by a machine or hand, the extension rod ensures installation to a depth reaching the firm soil.

The anchor can be power-installed due to its eye that engages in the adapter of the hole-boring machine. The wrench anchor serves best in loose to medium-dense soils. After installation, the exposed anchor should have a final height of 8-12 inches extending the grade height.

When the No-Wrench anchor is hand installed, it reduces the holding capacity by about 10-20%.  Failure to adhere to the 5° installation alignment with the guying mass will significantly minimize the strength. The capacity ratings are only applicable to anchors that are properly installed.

Procedure:

  1. The Kelly bar adapter should be attached to the output shaft or the digger’s Kelly bar.
  2. The power installation no-wrench tool should be bolted to the Kelly bar adapter.
  3. Appropriate pins located in the anchor installation tool to be removed. The anchor rod-eye to be inserted into the tool and the appropriate setting re-pinned.
  4. The wrench anchor to be driven at a vertical position. When the anchor’s helix submerges in the ground, the boom needs to be retracted to the accurate guy angle.

Note:

No-Wrench Screw Anchor can be installed in most types of soil.

It takes 8-10 minutes for the power-installed screw anchor to install when the wrench anchor is connected to the auger flight or Kelly bar of the digger and an arrangement of a locking dog supporting the anchor.

The screw anchor can be installed with a three-half foot rod or the 7-foot rod. It is possible to use either the 7 or 3 ½ foot rod. It is recommended to make a maximum of 14-feet of installing depth to support tool recovery.

Installation of the No-Wrench Screw Anchor by hand utilizes a power digger or turning bar. When using a digger, it needs an installing tool and adapter. There are limitations when using the anchor.

How does the No-Wrench Screw Anchor work?

The turning bar should be inserted into the forged eye’s opening on the rod and push the anchor into the ground.

When dealing with harder soils, the screw anchor can be started using a shovel to dig a small and shallow pilot hole.

After installation, ensure that the anchor’s eye is recommended to enhance guying before the installation tool is removed from the No-Wrench screw anchor.

Inspection and Maintenance

All fasteners should be periodically checked within the drive train to ensure they are undamaged and tightly fixed.

Loose parts can be thrown at high speed, causing injuries, death, or property damage. Loose bolts can interfere with the torque or cause damage to the drive train. It is recommended that replaced bolts be of the same length, grade, and size as the manufacturer’s originals.

Pins that are larger than the specified ones should not be used to prevent the cracking of the adapter.

All new screw anchor tools should have coil lock and retaining pins.
